چکیده

Bioactive compounds extracted from plants are widely used. The natural habitats for a large number of plants are rapidly destroyed leading to extinction of many valuable and even endemic species. Studies on the production of plant metabolites by callus and cell suspension cultures have been carried out on an increasing scale since the end of the 1950's. The prospect of using such culturing techniques is for obtaining secondary metabolites, such as active compounds for pharmaceuticalss and cosmetics, hormones, enzymes, proteins, antigens, food additives and natural pesticides from the harvest of the cultured cells or tissues. The large scale cultivation of tobacco and a variety of vegetable cells was examined from the late 1950's to early 1960's initiating more recent studies on the industrial application of plant cell culture techniquesin many countries. The first patent for the cultivation of plant tissue was received in 1956. Shortly afterwards, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) started to support research in the field of plant cell cultures for regenerative life support systems (Sajc et al., 2000).

Two new disposable bioreactors for plant cell culture: The wave and undertow bioreactor and the slug bubble bioreactor.

The present article describes two novel flexible plastic-based disposable bioreactors. The first one, the WU bioreactor, is based on the principle of a wave and undertow mechanism that provides agitation while offering convenient mixing and aeration to the plant cell culture contained within the bioreactor. The second one is a high aspect ratio bubble column bioreactor, where agitation and aera...

CFD for Characterizing Standard and Single-use Stirred Cell Culture Bioreactors

Driven by global competition and rising cost pressure in the pharmaceutical industry, over the last ten years single-use bioreactors have been increasingly used for animal cell cultivations in screening experiments, seed inoculum and seed train productions as well as in small and medium scale production processes of proteins (in particular, antibodies and vaccines). In contrast to re-usable bio...

Dynamic Single-Use Bioreactors Used in Modern Liter- and m(3)- Scale Biotechnological Processes: Engineering Characteristics and Scaling Up.

During the past 10 years, single-use bioreactors have been well accepted in modern biopharmaceutical production processes targeting high-value products. Up to now, such processes have mainly been small- or medium-scale mammalian cell culture-based seed inoculum, vaccine or antibody productions. However, recently first attempts have been made to modify existing single-use bioreactors for the cul...

Large-Scale Expansion of Human Embryonic and Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells for Cell Therapy Applications

Successful isolation, derivation and culturing of human pluripotent stem cells, including human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and human induced pluripotent stem (hiPSCs) cells in laboratory scale has opened new horizones for cell therapy applications such as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, most of the cell therapy protocols using these unique cells require large number of ...
